NO ONE SWUNG — OR SWORE — LIKE BUDDY RICH and here are the recordings to prove it. They have been compiled from secret tapes that were made by band members in the 70s and 80s then continuously duped and passed from one musician to another around the world. The quality is strictly bootleg, but the intensity is unmistakably Buddy. He knew of the existence of "the tapes" but hadn't heard them until the day before he died, when he insisted his friend Mel Torme play them for him. He listened. And he made Torme promise to transcribe them for his biography.
But simply reading Buddy's "rants" is no more satisfying than staring at his album covers. You've got to listen to him to appreciate him. Long available only on ever-diminishing generations of cassettes, the rants have now been digitally preserved by a variety of fans. This CD houses some of the best of those that have been preserved.
New to this evolving oral history are three remembrances from the late drumming legend Jim Chapin. And finally, as a coda to all this commentary, "The Buddy Rich Tapes" closes with a musical tour de force from a man who cussed like hell and played like the devil himself. It is fittingly titled "Diabolus."
Total running time: 30 minutes
